December Local Barre Love Story

I have always been a runner, but once LB came to town, I started integrating classes into my weekly workout routines. I had never been able to really change the shape of my body with just running. LB makes me feel so strong! I became more lean, tone, and confident. After a running injury shortly after the birth of my second child, I continued classes and added training sessions with Amber. Despite being unable to run, and ultimately needing a knee surgery, I bounced back from that pregnancy way more quickly than with my first. Now I'm expecting my third child and this time I plan to keep both LB classes and training sessions throughout my pregnancy. I am confident I will feel even stronger throughout my pregnancy and afterwards.

From the Barre to the Boulevard: Sarah Edition

Our December It Girl is melting anything in her path! If you've been trying to beat the holiday calorie hangover then you might have experienced our weighted series designed by Sarah, this month's instructor extraordinaire. When she's not busy calculating ways to make your biceps feel that blazing burn, she's trying out fabulous fashion looks. Okay, maybe that last part isn't entirely true but she is certainly nailing the modeling thing here.

I styled Sarah in an outfit she said she wouldn't normally wear. Come again? With a chiseled physique like hers I couldn't believe she had yet to try a body-con dress! I was clearly vicariously living through her as A-line dresses are what suit me best, so getting her in this sleek, sexy meets street silhouette was a win for both of us.

As you can see they were made for each other; even right down to the slate gray color that really complemented her vibrant red locks and perfect pout. I put this together as an effortless New Year's Eve look when your attire doesn't have to be 100% fancy but you still want to pull out all the stops. Adding the leather jacket on top is a great way to utilize a piece of everyday outerwear while adding an overall edge to your ensemble. {Make sure if you try this your leather jacket is a bit on the fitted side to keep the look polished and feminine. If you put a very bulky leather on top of such a sleek style you will lose the balance.} Finishing things off with the perfect details of a killer pair of heels, glitzy bracelets and a sophisticated clutch.

PSA! If you have a very streamlined outfit like this, opt for a smaller bag. Too many times I see women with a giant handbag made for daytime/work and they will wear it out in the evening with a refined look such as this. Even if it is the best name brand {I'm looking at you Louis V and Chanel} leave it at home and go for a smaller, more cohesive accessory like a handheld or envelope clutch. The bigger bags ruin the flow of the outfit and compete with the sleekness of the outfit. So clutch a clutch! It will take your night out look to level 100.

Beyond this haute to trot NYE look, there has also been some new arrivals in the Local Barre retail department. If you're looking for leggings that pull their inspiration from the Swarovski ball that drops in Times Square, look no further. LB's uptown, west and downtown locations have these glittery bottoms and more to get you ready to sweat in style.

Our December #LBItGirl, Sarah!

On tap this month is our December #LBItGirl, Sarah!

What do you do outside of barre?
When not pulsing, I am probably in a dance, pole, or aerial class. My life revolves around movement. Sitting still is not an option. Only time I am found still is when I am catching up on Scandal, HTGAWM, Nashville, & Chicago PD.

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?

I believe barre helped to save my career actually! After a dance injury where I partial tore my meniscus, I spent 8 weeks doing physical therapy with little improvement. It wasn’t until I found barre that I felt stability back in my knee. All those micro pulses made magic happen for me!

Health enthusiast? Tell us about your diet...vegan? raw? raw til 4? recipes? favorite seasonal dish or smoothie?
My father is a chef. I am physically incapable of saying no to food if I want it, no matter how bad it might be for me. Hence why I work hard at the barre so I can play hard when I dine out. ;-)

You’re splurging...what’s your weakness?
I can’t live without Peanut Butter. It is my “chocolate”. I am always buying specialty flavors such as cinnamon raisin swirl, honey twist, pumpkin spice, etc. My favorite restaurant in NYC is the Peanut Butter Company on 240 Sullivan St. It’s heavenly!

Tell us a secret.

I don’t like chocolate or coffee. And my father worked in a chocolate factory for the first 8 years of my life! Both tastes like ground dirt to me. I could be in the factory for hours and didn’t care to eat a single piece of chocolate. But you better believe I was always stealing from the secret stash of gummi worms...

One thing on your bucket list.
Drive to the Mall of America in an RV: this has been a childhood dream of mine! Something about it always seemed quintessentially patriotic to me and I am not giving up on the dream.

What’s on your “get amped” playlist?
Anything by Whitney Houston but this is no shock to any of our clients. I am chronically dancing around like a fool when she comes on!

All time favorite movie quote?
“Oh piss on your hat!” - Dottie from A League of their Own or ANY LINE from Drop Dead Gorgeous

High school: love or hate?
I went to a performing arts magnet program inside a regular old high school. Everyday was a scene out of Glee. I loved it.

Celebrity dinner party: who’s there?
Walt Disney, Oprah, & Bob Fosse. It’d be a colorful and delight meal with some of the most successful and creative minds who have ever impacted my life. The guest of honor would be my Grandma Rose because I would give anything to have one more meal with the strongest woman I ever knew.

Your last meal: what’s on the menu?
Definitely a pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich. #jerseygirlforever

From the Barre to the Boulevard: Meghan Edition

It's not difficult to get inspired by our barretenders. They're fun, fearless and somehow make eight counts sound inviting. This month's "It Girl" Meghan kills it in class but once she puts her grippy shoes away it's all about running after her two little ones.

Going from the barre to mom life can be an endless cycle of never wearing real pants! But when you've got a physique that was earned through working every last muscle it's important to have wardrobe pieces to accentuate that while still working with your lifestyle.

Enter a hot pair of jeans. From the playground to cocktails a great dose of denim will make you feel confident while having endless styling potential. Black jeans in particular can add an edge to daytime garb like this supple plaid shirt, and can also add a glamorous air when paired with heels for night. The rips in these are are playful, and are frayed beautifully to look like delicate fringe. If you've ever thought you couldn't do ripped denim because it comes across too youthful, think again. These are chic.

Finishing off this look is a textured topper with a leather jacket silhouette. The combination of strong and soft work beautifully here and again can be styled many ways. Wear a jacket like this as shown with jeans, over a dress with tights and ankle boots or with winter white trousers to really make a statement. The versatility of styling key pieces is essential when you're a mom with maybe ten minutes to get ready!

Jacket, plaid shirt and jeans all from our new neighbors, contemporary clothing store Alba Boutique, located on Washington Street between 7th and 8th.
