Our November #LBItGirl, Meghan!

On tap this month is our November #LBItGirl, Meghan!

What do you do outside of barre?
I am a mom to two young boys (3 and 10 months), so that keeps me very busy! Spending time with my family and friends is the most important thing to me.

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?

My love affair with barre started years ago when I lived in the city and was getting in shape for my wedding. When I moved to Hoboken I found Local Barre and came religiously, all throughout my first pregnancy and then after my first son was born, and it really got me back into shape and is the one thing that truly transformed my body, and I’ve tried it all!

Health enthusiast? Tell us about your diet...vegan? raw? raw til 4? recipes? favorite seasonal dish or smoothie?
I really eat anything and everything in moderation. I mostly eat healthy but depriving myself of things I want just doesn’t work for me. If I want that pizza and brownie I will have it...and then the next day I will probably have a salad and hit the barre :).

 Meghan-8_adj

How did you handle epic failure?
Teaching my first class was a bit of a disaster, I was so nervous! I learned to have confidence in myself and to focus on my strengths, and to never stop being a student.

Your go-to travel spot and why.

Cape Cod. I’ve been going my whole life and it’s my favorite place on Earth. When I drive over the bridge I am instantly relaxed.

What’s been essential to your success?
Always being willing to learn and improve, asking for constructive criticism, and not being afraid of hard work.

All time favorite movie quote?

How do you like them apples?

 Meghan-16_adj

From whom do you draw inspiration?
I am constantly inspired by our clients and my colleagues. Moms, wives, career women...no matter how busy these ladies are or what obstacles they’ve had to overcome to get here, they not only show up for class but they absolutely kill it! I am always touched when they share their stories with me.

That song on your iPod you don’t want anyone to know you have.
A lot of 90’s boy bands. 98 Degrees anyone?

You’re splurging...what’s your weakness?
I love to shop! I love clothes. It’s an issue. But what I probably spend the most money on these days is wine...I should really invest in a winery.

Meghan-5_adj

One thing on your bucket list.
I just want to travel!

Celebrity dinner party: who’s there?
I have a lot of people on this list! Definitely Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence. They are strong, hilarious, down-to-earth women who aren’t afraid to be themselves (and who doesn’t love a good laugh??). And also Matt Damon and Ben Affleck...I’m a Boston girl!

From the Barre to the Boulevard: Kim Edition

Kim_Gear_1_adj

We're closing out another amazing month, with another amazing "It-Girl". Kim rocked October from the bike to the barre. When she hit the streets in these styles though, she was definitely turning heads! It was all about creating petite-friendly looks for Kim's small frame while also tapping into the hottest Fall trends.

Kim_Gear_4_adj

Even if your vision isn't 20/20 you would be remiss not to notice that plaids and checks are the season's print du jour. Adding one into your wardrobe feels completely festive and gives your autumn attire something special. However, when you are on the smaller side, if these prints are on the wrong cut of fabric, they can look overwhelming or even dowdy. Sinful if you ask me, especially for how hard this hot mommy of two works to keep her physique svelte and toned.

Kim_Gear_2_adj

I found her the perfect buffalo check blanket sweater {by Bar III via Macy's} that fits in all the right places while still being a bit dramatic. The sleeves are the key factor here to keeping her proportion in check {no pun intended} and allowing this piece to be flouncy at the hem.

 Kim_Gear_5_adj

This sweater was so versatile adding so much to a jeans, tee, and knee-high boots ensemble for day and perfectly framing a wine hued mini-dress for night. Isn't that what we all want from our wardrobe, pieces that do double duty just like this fab barre-tender ;)

Our October #LBItGirl, Kim!

On tap this month is our October #LBItGirl, Kim!

Kim-2_adj_web

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?
I was a displaced fitness instructor from Philadelphia looking for an amazing workout upon moving to Hoboken. I immediately found Barre/Wheel at Local Barre. It was all over after taking my first class ;).

Health enthusiast? Tell us about your diet...vegan? raw? raw til 4? recipes? favorite seasonal dish or smoothie?
I am a huge believer in “everything in moderation”. I practice this and have my private clients practice it as well. If you go overboard, don’t think of your day/diet/otherwise as “wasted” or “lost” - you can right your ship whenever you decide to get back on track! For smoothies: water//kale//protein powder//apple//orange//banana//bee pollen//flax seed//chia seeds. For salads: arugula//watermelon//grape tomatoes//red onion//feta cheese//white balsamic vinegrette homemade dressing.

Your go-to travel spot and why.

The beach; my spirit is immediately lifted when near the ocean.

What’s been essential to your success?
My drive and perseverance. Not being afraid to work hard and not being afraid to hear the word “no”.

All time favorite movie quote?

”I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Marlon Brando in The Godfather

You’re splurging...what’s your weakness?
Wine. Cheese. I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t like.

One thing on your bucket list.
Skydiving!

Celebrity dinner party: who’s there?
Mae West, Eartha Kitt, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner, and Ginger Rogers.

From the Barre to the Boulevard: Janelle Edition

IMG_7386_adj_web

Here comes the new season and with it all the styles we love! If you've been working hard at the barre and let's be real if you've taken a class taught by "It Girl" Janelle, then you're definitely working hard. Her tone has a sly way of making you think what you're about to do isn't that hard and then 30 seconds later you feel the burn. Tricky, tricky! But when you emerge with a perky booty and feel toned all over, who can complain? Your leather pants will be applauding you for your efforts. If you don't have a pair, get on it. They are a great alternative to jeans and hug in all the right places while adding a subtle edginess to all you pair them with.

IMG_7387_adj_web

I styled Janelle in the bottom of the season alongside a color combination that screams autumn. Olive + Aubergine {or really any family member on the red wine scale} are colors we don't see too much in the summer and styling them together for fall really makes a refreshing impact. This cardigan is fun with it's chunky knit and textured fringe. You can throw it over tons of tanks, dresses or even a leather croptop for fun ;) Booties with a nice, low, thick heel are essential. They tend to be more comfortable and can work with so many items in your wardrobe. If you already have a great neutral pair in your repertoire, I advise you to go with an eye-catching color like these by Ted Baker. You would be surprised how many looks they can go with!

IMG_7373_adj_web

Finally, finish things off with a great accessory that literally spells it out for you. This cheeky little clutch {by Kate Spade! Yes, Kate Spade finally made it's way to Hoboken!} can go with leather pants to a glam evening look, there are so many styling possibilities.

 IMG_7349_adj_web

All these items are from neighborhood store Two Heathers! You can find their boutique at 331 Washington Street.

Outside of barre I love hanging with family and friends. My family is the most important thing in my life!

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?
I've always been in the fitness industry and have pretty much done every workout under the sun. The first time I took barre I was immediately obsessed.

Janelle-9_adj

Tell us about your diet.

I eat anything and everything. I eat mostly healthy but don't hold myself back from "unhealthy" foods. It's all about portion control.

Hard and fast rules you live by.
Be kind to people because you never know what someone else is going through.

What's your splurging weakness?

Vodka. :)

Janelle-11_adj2

Daniel Tosh. He's hysterical.

What’s on your “get amped” playlist?
Booyah by Showtech.

One tip for having the best Barre experience.
Enjoy it, it's your workout and all about what you make of it!

Your last meal: what's on the menu?
Geez, that's a scary question. I'm not sure but it would definitely have a martini involved!

Our August #LBItGuy, Robert!

On tap this month is our August #LBItGuy, Robert!

Robert-3_adj_WEB

Tell us about any exciting activities you do outside of Barre and Wheel?
Well, right now I’m gearing up for two September performances with my company, Robert Mark Dance, and just finished performing for Barretender Arielle with her company, Zella Dance. I also dance for an all-male company, 10 Hairy Legs. There seems to be a lot of dance in my life! But that’s not all I’m about! I love going on fun New York City excursions and exploring different museums! I also LOVE movie dates with my best friends! If you haven’t gone to see “Inside Out” what are you waiting for????

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?
I actually went to school with Arielle and Jessica and they told me about how much fun they had at Local Barre! I had to get in on action and have been hooked ever since!

Robert-15_adj_WEB

What’s been essential to your success?
Never being afraid of feedback. It’s only way to get better at what you do!

Robert-12_adj_WEB

Hard and fast rules you live by.
Work hard. Play hard. Repeat.

What’s on your “get amped” playlist?
Definitely, the entire Lady Gaga “Art Pop” album! It’s my go-to whenever I go for a run!

Robert-21_adj_WEB

One tip for having the best Barre experience.
Don’t worry about the person next to you! Everyone takes their own journey to being fit, so just enjoy yours and work to your fullest potential!

You’re splurging...what’s your weakness?
Food, for sure! All kinds of food! It’s so dangerous!

High school: love or hate?
I guess it depends on what moment in time you’re talking about ;) I was the kid that did all the musicals, was Vice President of the Senior Class, and also took AP and Honors classes, which was great because I got to have a super tight knit group of friends, most of whom I am still friends with today! No getting pushed into lockers for me, but I definitely wasn’t at the top of the food chain!

On tap this month is our July #LBItGirl, Jessica!

Jessica-2_adj_WEB

Tell us about any exciting activities you do outside of Barre and Wheel?
On top of working at Local Barre, I'm a company member of Zella Dance and work as a Physical Therapist Aide part-time in my home town Sparta, New Jersey.

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre?
Well, Arielle and I are actually best friends from college. After we graduated with a B.F.A. from Rutgers in 2013, she began working here that summer and couldn't stop talking about how fun and intense the work out was. I started calling myself a Barretender a month later!

Jessica-10_adj_WEB_copy

What’s been essential to your success?
Not to get cheesy...but my parents. They're my biggest support. When I was 8 years old, I was given the opportunity to dance on a full scholarship at the School of American Ballet. My dad would have to pull me out of school early so we could drive into the city. That's 3 hours round trip of driving for an hour and a half class, 5 days a week. He never complained once. I remember laughing until my cheeks and belly hurt from all the jokes and games we would play in the car. He would even put my hair in a bun until I got the hang of it and could do it on my own. Yes ladies, Dad's got skills. Haha!

An epic success and/or failure, and how you handled it.
Dance has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. When I go to auditions in the city, I'm faced with rejection constantly. No matter what the obstacle is you're facing in life, don't stop just because someone says no. So before you go home, start building a blanket fort and decide to color all day because you "just can't adult" anymore lol...trust that you've been put on a path to something even better!

Jessica-7_adj_WEB

Your go-to travel spot and why.
San Juan, Puerto Rico! Both my parents are Puerto Rican and my family has a condo over there. The culture is beautiful and the hospitality from everyone on the island is so inviting.

What’s on your “get amped” playlist?
Sweet Escape by Alesso. I'm getting more and more obsessed with EDM.

Jessica-4_adj_WEB

One tip for having the best Barre experience.
Don't compare yourself to your neighbor in class, we're all at different levels! The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.

You’re splurging...what’s your weakness?
Lululemon owns me. So. Much. Black. Spandex.

Your last meal: what’s on the menu?
Steel cut brown sugar and cinnamon oatmeal, scrambled eggs with mozzarella, Greek yogurt with frozen berries and honey. I love breakfast foods. A lot.

Our June #LBItGirl, Lauren Doto!

On tap this month is our June #LBItGirl, Lauren, a one-time devoted client who realized her dream by becoming a Local Barre barretender.

Lauren-2_adj_WEB

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Local Barre?
Ummm yes... I would literally fantasize about becoming a Local Barre instructor. I had a playlist and red lip in my bag just on the off chance that the instructor had an emergency and I would get to save the day by teaching. This is not a joke people!

Health enthusiast? Tell us about your diet...vegan? raw? raw til 4? recipes? favorite seasonal dish or smoothie?
This is a tricky one. I try to eat well but sometimes the chicken parm takes over. I am happy to say that I have been able to limit it to once a month (down from 2-3 times a week) and have been drinking protein shakes now that the weather is nicer. I’ve also recently been on a Blue Apron kick which I LOVE!

Your go-to travel spot and why.
Pennsylvania. It is where my husband and I are from and we have a house there.

May #LBItGirl, Donielle!

On tap this month is our May #LBItGirl, dancer and yoga guru Donielle.

Tell us about any exciting activities you do outside of Barre/Wheel?
I like to take aerial classes. If I'm not in barre... I'm cycling, climbing and inverting in pole and fabric classes. I love being upside down in yoga too!

Was there an interesting path that led you to teaching at Barre/Wheel?
I started taking class at Local Barre when I'd visit my boyfriend (now fiancé and husband in June!) in Hoboken. I'm a dancer first and foremost so the name Local "Barre" caught my eye.
